It’s finally done! Working on Hellboy’s gun was a little bit more of an undertaking than I had originally imagined. It was fun though, so although it took maybe a couple weeks longer than I estimated.
Although it doesn’t have all the functionality that a prop version might have like lights in the shells, a lock that opens the cylinder, and maybe a few other various details like the logo embedded in the handle I think I came out with a good compromise.
My version includes a cylinder that you can load shells in (which I’m currently still working on the shells themselves), a working hinge to access those shells and the cylinder, and the most interesting part a Locking System made from small inserted magnets.
The hinge is open here, and it’s not being held together by anything. I ended up printing a cylindrical pin that holds the two large pieces together which works as the main pivot point.
As for the locking mechanism, I printed an inset on the top left corner above the cylinder where the two large pieces meet. That way I can easily hide some small cylindrical magnets that will work as a somewhat stable locking mechanism instead of engineering the release pin on the side of the base. Not to say I couldn’t design that locking mechanism but I had these magnets sitting around and I wanted to give it a shot. As you can see from the video above, it locks into place perfectly!
So I guess that’s it. That’s the whole thing! All done. On to the next project!
